what is Thread Die?

A die is a highly effective and widely used tool in the industry, similar in function to a tap but with the key difference that while taps are used for creating internal threads, dies are used for creating external threads.

Dies allow you to thread shafts and rods for use in fastening nuts and various connections.

Dies come in various thread types, with the most commonly used including metric, inch, G series, fine thread, and more.

Like taps, dies are also made from high-hardness alloy steels, with the most common being high-speed steel (HSS).

For using dies, a special die handle is required. The die handle is designed to center the die and hold it firmly in place with several screws surrounding it.

How to work with a hand Die?

Working with a hand die is not a difficult task. To start, first insert the selected die into the die handle and secure it well. Ensure there are no burrs on the edge of the rod or pipe before starting the threading process. It’s helpful to create a slight chamfer on the edge.

Next, position the center of the die on the cross-section of the rod and begin turning. For every full turn you make, rotate a quarter turn in the opposite direction to separate the chips. Continue this process until the desired amount of threading is achieved.

Once done, turn the die in the opposite direction to remove it from the rod. It’s advisable to use oil during the threading process to minimize friction and make the work easier.
