Types of CNC Milling Based on Axis Types

Five-Axis CNC Milling Machine:

The rotation around the X-axis, represented by axis A, and the Y-axis, represented by axis B, are two additional axes that provide greater freedom of movement in this machine.

Four-Axis CNC Milling Machine:

The presence of one additional axis for milling distinguishes this machine from the three-axis type. In this model, the machine has the capability to rotate around the X-axis, which is called axis A.

Three-Axis CNC Milling Machine:

In these machines, the cutting tool rotates along three axes around a fixed workpiece. Milling, creating grooves, drilling, and making sharp edge cuts are capabilities of this machine.

Axis Movements:

  • X axis – Left and Right
  • Y axis – Forward and Backward
  • Z axis – Up and Down
  • A axis – Rotation around the X axis
  • B axis – Rotation around the Y axis
  • C axis – Rotation around the Z axis
